I started out with hair that was dyed a dark brown with less than 20% gray roots/natural color showing.I wanted to dye it a medium reddish brown.I figured the roots would turn out lighter than the ends so i decided to dye the ends up to 2 inches from root with a Champaigne Blonde color. The color turned out good. The ends came out a lighter red-brown.I bought a red-brown hair dye specifically for brunettes. It supposedly lifts up to 4 shades before depositing color.I read the directions. It said to put the color on the ends first if you dyed it a dark brown and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Then apply it to the roots for 10-15 minutes then rinse. My roots turned out a orangy-red color and the rest was a light reddish-brown.I bought some haircolor remover and used it and lifted it to a reddish-blonde color.I then applied a medium reddish-brown over it.My hair is a dark carrot red not reddish-brown.I cant afford to go to a salon.Any suggestions? Please help. :/
Orange-red hair, need advice.?
I'm sorry but some people really don't know what they're talking about!! I've done the SAME exact thing, and honestly, as long as your hair isn't falling out from finger combing, its fine!
I suggest going to WalMart or a drugstore of any kind. There's a product in a purple bottle called Fanci Full. Its a rinse, so it won't do anything to your hair but deposit color. Plus, its 110% reversible, as it washes out the very next time. I actually had orange hair too, and I used the Chocolate Brown, and now my hair looks like a natural multitonal light brown.
To be truthful, I have NEVER seen anyone go to a reddish from dark brown using box color successfully... ever!! And I understand not wanting to go to a salon, they charge an arm and a leg for a sometimes easy fix!
Best of luck to you!! And when all else fails, that's why bandanas were invented!! :-)

Orange-red hair, need advice.?
its hard to lighten hair color with hair color...go to sally beauty supply and look at the ion line of color.....pick something you like.but get something a shade lighter then what you would want because they always go a shade darker on and get a filler.if the line dont have it check out the semi or demi colors.....better for your hair at this point.stick with a natural base nothing with red...if you want to remove the color and start over get a remover first..then add your color.but whatever you do make sure you get a good conditioner...like ion extreme moisture.
