Highlight red hair?

My 13 year old sister has natural red hair. She wants me to put subtle blonde highlights in it. But I have no idea how. How do I do this, if I even can? If not, what else can I do similar?

blonde highlights on red hair looks really great!! But seen as she wants blonde highlights get her to go to a hairdresser, if you are doing any blonding for the first time it is really easy to stuff it up, and especially on red hair, because of the pigmentation stages.

if she wants them just through the top, go to hairdresser, but if she wants them all throughout another option is getting a highlighting cap packet. It has the cap, the tool for pulling through the hair and the color. But it can be a big mission and it does hurt a little when hair is pulled through.

If you do choose the cap option, before putting on the cap, add a little talc powder into the cap, it helps it go on easy and it doesnt hurt so much when you pull the hair through and ALWAYS read instructions, if you are not sure about doing it yourself, go to a hairdresser.

I would you any loreal highlighting kit- They have one thats "Champainge Blonde" highlights that would really flatter a natural blonde. You can do it, the trick is to do it randomly, stay an inch away from the roots and make them long thin random lines throughout her head. minimal is best. focus around framing the face and then random strands under the hair on the sides and in the back. it will come out nice- maybe leave it in 5minutes less then they tell you and remember you can always add more later...

I think she should keep her red hair. Red hair is pretty!

But if she MUST dye it, she should go to a salon and get someone to pick out the right color and do it right.

Try clairol's frost 'n tip. Oh, and they'll already have instructions in the box.

I'm a natural red head. This is what I do. I get very natural looking highlights

Use the Herbal Essence Highlighting Kit in the Carmel tone.

But don't use their brush thing. Instead use a regular plastic comb with medium sized teeth.

1. Have her part her hair as she would normally wear it.

2. Apply the dye across the comb and brush it in starting at the roots and brush all the way down to the end of the hair. Do this across her whole head. The trick is don't get it too thick or too thin. You can apply a little bit more here and there to get more highlight effect.

3. Take the top half of her hair clip it up and do the underneath layer they same way. Let the clipped hair down.

4. Take a clean plastic grocery sack and put it over her hair and clip it in the back to keep it secure.

5. Leave it on the for the max. amount of time. Redhair is harder to lift and washing it out too soon will only result in orange highlights. Not a cute look =).

6. Rinse, condition and dry

I recomend that you take her to a salon an have it proffessionally done. You take a great risk to do it at home if you don't understand color. You'll end up paying more if it doesn't turn out right
